OOO: How do you volunteer?
The seez of giving is here 🕊️
Woah. Volunteering can increase the likelihood an unemployed person finds work, it boosts mental health and it makes the world a better place?
Say less, fam.
(Actually, I’m going to say more…after the ad. You can click it to help me offset the costs of this newsletter, share this pub with your homies or donate directly.)

Last month, I achieved 100 volunteering hours with the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center, which I started volunteering with a year ago. I walk, socialize and help care for shelter dogs, and sometimes work events.
Last week, a stray pitbull came into my life. I named him Hamilton after my neighborhood. We spent the night in my garage together (my own pups aren’t fans of four-legged strangers) until I could find a place for him to go. No one came looking for him, so he’s currently up for adoption at the Main Line Animal Shelter in Phoenixville, Penn.
Isn’t he the cutest?! 🐶👇

I’m not the only one who finds value in volunteering. Nearly a third (28.3%) of all U.S. adults formally volunteered through an organization in 2023, according to the latest Census data. This marked a return to pre-pandemic levels, and it doesn’t even include all the informal work that y’all are doing out there.
My own network gave their insight, too:
I've long given donations to organizations and initiatives I believe in, but only in recent months have I volunteered my time at a local kitchen that feeds thousands daily. I am proud of the advancement I've made in my thinking around volunteering; it's for me. The people I want to meet and spend time with are similarly volunteering.
I play the harp. I take it to nursing homes and the public library. I play therapeutic, calming, restoring music. Most of the tunes I play are from therapy harpist composers. At Christmas time, I play Christmas carols in keeping with the season. I'll play one to two hours in the afternoon, usually about every other month.
I do sometimes play for businesses, churches, and community groups when I have the time. They have to pay an hourly fee. But for the older folks and the public libraries, I do it for the joy I see it bring to people's faces and the way it makes me feel.
Someone even told me about the new toolkit created by Mass 50501 (an org working to beat authoritarianism via nonviolent resistance) that helps communities host a food drive. While focused on Massachusetts, it’s easily adaptable to other regions.
And a recent Criminal podcast episode focused on residents of Rogers Park in Chicago who are working as an organized unit to stop ICE from kidnapping residents in a highly diverse neighborhood within a sanctuary city.
A little reminder…
It’s easy to get caught up in our own shit this holiday season. I know I’ll be dealing with some of that. But at the same time, we need each other. Humans, animals, and so on. So let’s fucking come together and do what we can to make our corner of the world a little better. Because the work does not begin and end with your 9–5.
Before I end this…check out Nolan, who’s preparing to spend his 3rd Christmas at his foster home. He’s available for adoption to a no-pet household in Lancaster. I’ve personally dog-sat him and can say he’s a lovely velcro beast. Contact me for more info.
